Kiribati is a Pacific island nation of 33 atolls and islands spread across the central Pacific. Its capital, Tarawa, sits on a low-lying atoll, and much of the country’s land is only a few metres above sea level.
That geography makes Kiribati one of the countries most exposed to sea-level rise. Coastal erosion, saltwater intrusion into freshwater supplies, and more intense storms are already affecting communities. Climate change study in Tarawa covers adaptation planning, coastal protection, water security, and the difficult question of long term habitability.
