In Germany, a 1.5 is an excellent grade. The German grading scale runs from 1 to 6, and the numbers work in reverse: 1 is the best and 6 is the worst. A 1.5 falls in the “sehr gut” band, which means very good. It signals outstanding work.
German schools use a 6-point scale from primary school through lower secondary school. In upper secondary school, a 15-point scale is used for finer grading. At universities, grades run from 1.0 to 5.0, where 4.0 is the lowest passing grade and 5.0 means failed. A 1.5 at university level sits in the very good band of 1.0 to 1.5.
So if you see a 1.5 on a German transcript, read it as a top mark, not a poor one. Anyone converting foreign grades into the German system should use the target university’s own conversion method, since methods differ.
