The Solomon Islands is an archipelago of nearly 1,000 islands in the South Pacific whose people depend heavily on the sea. Nearly 75 percent of the population lives in rural and vulnerable coastal areas, and fish supplies about 57 percent of animal-source protein intake, with per-capita consumption around 73 kilograms a year. Roughly 30 percent of the population relies on fishing for income.
Community-based coastal and marine resource management has become the country’s main conservation approach. WorldFish has worked with the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources and the Malaita provincial government on community-based management since 2011, and a nationwide scaling strategy was launched in 2022.
Fisheries management studies draw on marine science and policy. Related reading includes marine protected areas management in Palau, marine resource management in Maine, marine biology research in the Florida Keys, and Pacific island leadership in Micronesia.
Career paths include fisheries extension work, marine conservation planning, and policy roles with government agencies and regional organizations.
