Comoros is an archipelago in the western Indian Ocean, and its capital and largest city is Moroni, on Grande Comore. The country became independent from France in 1975.
Its national football team is nicknamed the Coelacanths, after the ancient fish found in nearby waters. In 2021 the team qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time and reached the round of 16 on its debut. Qualification was sealed with a goalless draw against Togo in March 2021. The original article described a ‘monumental victory against Kenya’ as the qualifying moment; that was wrong, and it has been corrected here.
On education: classroom technology such as wireless screen sharing is now common in schools, and companies such as Airtame make tools for it. Technology only helps when teachers are trained to use it and the basics, electricity and connectivity, are in place. Our online learning experience guide covers making the most of digital study tools.
Students in Comoros and similar settings benefit most from reliable fundamentals: trained teachers, working infrastructure, and curricula matched to local needs. For those considering study elsewhere, study abroad opportunities and Indian Ocean studies in Moroni are useful starting points.
