Yaounde, Cameroon’s capital, is an important center for tropical medicine research in Central Africa. The city hosts the Centre for Research in Infectious Diseases (CRID), which studies malaria, neglected tropical diseases, and insecticide resistance in malaria-carrying mosquitoes, and the Institute of Medical Research and Studies of Medicinal Plants (IMPM), which works on medicinal plants and public health.
Cameroon carries a heavy burden of tropical disease. Malaria is widespread, and onchocerciasis (river blindness) and schistosomiasis affect many rural communities. Research in Yaounde focuses on disease surveillance, diagnostics, treatment, and prevention strategies.
Cameroonian researchers collaborate with international partners. The Gates Foundation has funded onchocerciasis research in the country, supporting work to map transmission zones and improve control programs.
