Breaking Down Federal SEOG Grants for Undergrads

The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, or FSEOG, is a federal grant for undergraduate students with exceptional financial need. Unlike a loan, it does not have to be repaid. Each participating college receives a fixed amount of FSEOG funding per year, so money can run out. Apply early.

Grants range from $100 to $4,000 per year. The maximum can rise to $4,400 for a student in an approved study-abroad program, when the program’s costs exceed the cost of attending the home school. These limits come from federal regulation 34 CFR 676.20.

Your school decides your award based on your financial need and how much funding it has left. Students with the lowest expected family contributions who also receive Pell Grants get priority. Not every school takes part in the program, so check with your financial aid office.

To be considered, file the FAFSA each year. There is no separate FSEOG application. Because funds are limited, filing early improves your chances.
