There is no single best state for international students. The right state depends on your field, your budget, and the kind of place you want to live. The US hosted more than 1.1 million international students in the 2023-24 academic year, according to the Institute of International Education, so every state has some experience with students from abroad.
A few states host the largest numbers. California, New York, and Texas have long been among the top states for international enrollment, which means bigger international student communities and more support services. Other states offer lower living costs and smaller class sizes, which suits many students better.
Weigh four factors: the strength of universities in your field, the total cost of attendance, job and internship options nearby, and whether you want a big city or a smaller town. Visit if you can, or at least talk to current students before you commit.
